Literature Assignment 2

Write one paragraph each for why Jack and the Giant both deserve my sympathy.

I sympathise with Jack as i feel that he lead a very poor life, with a widowed mother and only a cow, Milky-White, to depend on its milk to live. However, despite their financial issues, Jack was hardworking and determined to find ways to earning money to help in their current financial difficulties. However, Jack also showed signs of greediness. From the part when a funny old man told Jack that if the seeds were planted overnight, they would grow right up to the sky, Jack was enticed and immdiately traded his cow for those magic beans. Another scene was when Jack climbed up the big beanstalk which grew right up to the sky, he always took advantage of the giant by stealing his possessions time and again. For the first time, Jack was not satisfied with the bag of gold and was bold enough to return twice, each time stealing one of the giant's vauluables. However, i feel that although Jack resorted to stealing, he was desperately in need of money to support both his mother and himself. Therefore, I sympathise with Jack.

I sympathise with the giant as i feel that he was taken advantage by Jack just because he had riches that Jack did not have. I feel that it is very unfair towards the Giant as when he was chasing after Jack, trying his best to retrieve his stolen valuables, Jack had chopped the beanstalk into half, causing the Giant to fall to his death. Also, this act of Jack probably destroyed the Giant's only home. However, in the passage it states that the Giant devours Englishman boys, and i feel that the Giant is very selfish, taking away innocent lives just to please his appetite.

Enjoy,
LiYing

Do you sympathise with the Joker?

No i do not sympathise with the Joker. Personally,I feel that he is a cunning, cruel and psychotic killer.

First and foremost, The Joker finds pleasure in killing people. He treats it as a leisure and take away innocent lives just to satisfy himself. Although The Joker knew that killing people was wrong, he still kills without hesitation and remorse For example, in the movie, The Joker and his accomplices were attempting to rob a bank. As The Joker's identity was well-hidden, his accomplices were unaware of his true self. Before the plan of robbing the bank was executed, The Joker ordered his accomplices to kill one another, tricking them into thinking that they could have a larger portion of the loot. His accomplices heeded his instructions, and insted of getting a larger sum of money as what The Joker told them, they ended up being killed by their accomplice. The Joker used this opportunity to kill his remaining accomplices, and claimed the money robbed for himself. Such an evil and celf-centred person definitely does not deserve any sympathy.

Secondly, The Joker mentioned once that if batman does not reveals his true identity, the people in Gotham will die. One by one. And this caused the citizens of Gotham to blame Batman for the state they are in. Although previously, the people of Gotham were very grateful to Batman for helping them, they felt that Batman should surrender and sacrifice himself for Gotham City. The Joker even broadcasted a video of Batman killing someone, hoping to achieve his goal of revealing Batman's true identity. Through The Joker's actions, it is obvious that he wants to gain control of Gotham City. Also, The Joker believes that only by instilling fear into people, will they obey him and follow his instructions. I feel that this sadistic mindset of The Joker does not deserve my sympathy.

Lastly, I feel sorry for The Joker had a very traumatised childhood, with his face scarred by his drunkard father, who stuck a blade into his mouth and also, his wife, a gambler, got herself into debts and once, loansharks carved her face with a knife, however, The Joker who tried to prove that he didn't mind the scars, stuck a razor into his mouth. However, in the end, his wife left him as she thought he was too ugly. However, this does not give The Joker the right to take away innocent lives just to seek revenge and torture people to let them go through his painful childhood. I feel that The Joker is a very cruel person and does not deserve my sympathy at all.

The Joker has commited many serious crimes and has caused countless innocent lives to be taken away. I feel that his actions are very brutal and ruthless, which does not deserve my sympathy. The Joker is a psychotic and cruel man who does not hesitate to kill anyone and anything that gets in his way. He treats killing as a joke and does not feel remorseful at all. Also, I feel that his mindset is filled with hatred and thus, leading to him thinking that violence and fear is the only way for people to do as he says. Therefore, i strongly feel that The Joker does not deserve my sympathy.

What have you learnt from this lesson?

Through this lesson, I have learnt that not everyone is good and every person has his or her own positive and negative side. Also, i learnt that heroes and villains may have similar traits, however, there is always a trait that sets them apart. For example, Batman and The Joker may be witty, however, Batman and The Joker's personality are worlds apart. Batman is a kind-hearted person, while The Joker is a psychotic and cruel person. I feel that being a hero does not mean you have to do be similar to Batman, like saving the city. Being a hero can also be proved through small actions, for example helping your friends and teachers etc. However, being a villain or hero depends on yourself.

Also, i learnt that first impressions count. However, we should not allow first impressions affect our opinion on others. I feel that only by truly understanding a person, can you determine if they are good or bad. I learnt that our actions, speech and appearance always set a standard for ourselves in others.
